Chewy vs Amazon is not a loyalty quiz. It is a reordering problem. Pet food is a repeat SKU with a best-by date, a bag that cannot sit in a hot truck forever, and a dog that notices when you switch “the same” food that is not the same.
Chewy wins when you want a pet-first autoship, a human on the chat, and a catalog that behaves like a pet store. Amazon wins when the landed price on the exact bag is better, Prime is already how the house runs, and you will police the seller name like an adult. Winner by job
Want the same growth or adult diet to show up every four weeks without a treasure hunt? Chewy.
Want the cheapest honest landed price this afternoon on a bag you can verify is sold and shipped by a name you recognize? Amazon, sometimes.
Want fresh-food subscriptions? Neither — that is Farmer’s Dog or Ollie. Want litter for a Litter-Robot? Same logic as kibble: pick the store that will still have that SKU in August.
The SKU problem
“Purina Pro Plan Puppy” is not one object. Protein, bag size, and “sensitive skin” variants multiply. Amazon’s Buy Box can rotate sellers. Chewy’s catalog is still a catalog, but it is less likely to quietly hand you a different flavor because an algorithm shrugged.
If your dog has an elimination diet or a prescription food, Chewy’s pharmacy/vet-diet lane is the grown-up path. Amazon is where people accidentally buy the over-the-counter lookalike. That is not a vibe. That is a relapse.
Our puppy food ranking assumes you can repurchase the winner. A store that cannot promise that is the wrong store.
Autoship vs Subscribe & Save
Chewy Autoship is the feature people mean when they say they “use Chewy.” You can skip, you can move the date, and the site is built around repeating pet SKUs. Amazon Subscribe & Save can be cheaper on a percentage and more chaotic on availability.
Use Autoship if missing a bag is a household crisis. Use Subscribe & Save if you like stacking percentages and you will notice when the shipment flips to a different count.
Neither autoship should outrun the freezer or the pantry. A 34-pound bag in a studio in July is how kibble goes stale. Buy the bag size you will finish.
Price and shipping
There is no permanent cheaper store. We will not publish a fake spreadsheet of every bag. Check the landed price: item + tax + shipping − promo, on the same SKU.
Chewy’s free-shipping threshold and Autoship discount are the everyday levers. Amazon’s levers are Prime, Subscribe & Save, and coupons that expire while you blink. If you do not have Prime, Chewy often feels less punitive on a 30-pound box.
Returns on opened pet food are a courtesy, not a right. Do not order four novel proteins as a tasting menu. Transition food like a person who has cleaned vomit out of a crate.

When to use each — and when to skip both
Skip both if a local independent has the bag and you want that store to exist next year. Skip Amazon if the seller is a name you cannot map to a company. Skip Chewy if they are out of stock and the dog eats tonight.
For harnesses, beds, and GPS hardware, the same rule applies: no-pull harnesses, large-breed beds, and GPS collars should be bought as specific SKUs, not as “the Amazon choice.”
