Is a Fi collar worth it in 2026?
A Fi collar is worth it when the dog can leave a yard or trail, you want GPS you are not charging every weekend, and you will pay the membership in month seven — not just during the unboxing.
It is not worth it as a $149 charm, as a cheaper AirTag, or as a substitute for a latch. Hardware commonly about $149. Membership often about $99/year or about $12/month. Verdict
Worth it: escape-prone dogs, rural edges, trail dogs, households that will keep the membership funded.
Not worth it: a third-floor apartment with a latch and a chip; people who will not pay $99 a year; anyone who wanted Whistle health charts more than a three-month battery story.
Mini is a size variant, not a cheaper philosophy. Series 3 is the default for a 50-pound dog.
What you are buying
A collar module, an app, geofences, and a cellular bill. IP68-class water resistance is why swimmers stay on Fi. Coverage is still towers. Canyons do what canyons do.
Activity tracking exists. It is not why Fi wins our ranking. Battery is why.
Tags and a microchip remain mandatory. Fi is extra.

Hardware ~$149. Annual membership often ~$99 (~$8/month) or ~$12 monthly. Year one often near $250. Year two is the plan only if you keep the same collar.
Whistle year-one totals land in the same neighborhood once the plan is on. Do not pick Fi because $149 looks cheaper than a $130 Whistle plus $10/month without doing the addition.

When it is worth it
The dog has a bolt résumé. The fence is a suggestion. You hike. You will not charge a tracker like a phone. You already own a harness and you will not clip the leash to the module.
When it is not worth it
You wanted an AirTag. You wanted Whistle health. You will cancel the plan after the first quiet month. The dog cannot leave the crate in a studio. Fireworks panic is the leak — that is management, then GPS as a backup.
