An AirTag on a dog is a Bluetooth finder, not a GPS collar. The job is: keep Apple’s disc on a collar so it does not become a chew, and understand that it pings other iPhones — it does not text you from a canyon.

Buy an AirTag plus a named silicone or leather holder if you already live in iPhone-dense blocks and you want a $29 bonus on the collar. Buy Fi or Whistle if the dog can leave a yard. Skip AirTag as the only plan for a bolt artist. Skip no-name holders that eat the speaker hole and rattle loose. Do not clip a leash to the holder.

Fi is not an AirTag holder. It sits here because that is the fork. Battery and escape tracking are why it wins our GPS ranking. Is Fi worth it.

- Dogs that can leave — this slot exists so you buy the right radio
- Skip if
- You only wanted a $29 charm.

A breakaway / safety collar that can hold a tag
The collar is still ID. An AirTag on a martingale or a breakaway needs a design that does not become a noose. Tags and a chip remain mandatory.

- Cats and dogs that snag — the holder still needs a safe collar
- Skip if
- You put an AirTag on a hanging hazard and called it done.

What AirTag actually does
Find My crowd-finds the tag. Lost Mode notifies you when it is seen. Precision Finding is a living-room sport. It is not geofence LTE. That comparison is Fi vs AirTag.
