Best dog life jackets (2026)
A dog life jacket is flotation plus a handle, not a fashion vest. The job is: the dog is on a boat, a dock, or a current, and you need to grab them without a fistful of wet fur.
We ranked PFDs US owners can buy from a brand site, with a skip-if on chest measurement. Scores are editorial. We did not tank-test buoyancy. Public prices are dated September 20, 2026. A jacket is not a swimming lesson and not a stroller for water.

The short list
Buy the Ruffwear Float Coat if you will be on real water and you will measure the girth. Buy Kurgo if you want a competent vest with pockets for a weekend lake and you already like their car gear. Buy Outward Hound if the budget is the leak and you still buy a handle and a belly strap, not a costume. Skip “shark fin” novelty vests as the only flotation. Skip letting a bulldog free-swim off a dock because “dogs can swim.”

The Float Coat is the PFD we buy when the water is not a backyard. Neck flotation, a serious handle, reflective trim, and a size chart you should actually use. It is not a walking harness — see Ruffwear vs Kurgo.

- Boats, current, and dogs you may need to hoist
- Skip if
- You needed a $25 lake day and a photo, or the dog will never see water deeper than a kiddie pool.

Kurgo surf / life vest line
Kurgo is the competent second. Fine for a canoe and a calm lake. Pair it with their car restraint on the drive, not as one object. Read the weight range.

- Weekend lakes when you already trust Kurgo’s hardware
- Skip if
- You wanted Ruffwear’s neck float and will pay for it.

Outward Hound is the vest people actually finish buying. Get the one with a handle and straps that go under the ribs. Skip the costume fin as the only foam. Fine for a kayak on a pond. Not fine for a rip.

- Budget flotation with a handle for a supervised pond
- Skip if
- The dog is a boat commuter or a poor swimmer in current.

Hurtta’s Life Savior is the other serious vest. Good cut on some Nordic-adjacent bodies. Buy it if the size chart wins, not because the brand photos are foggy and expensive.

- Owners who want a European cut and will pay import-adjacent money
- Skip if
- You needed next-day Prime and a $30 vest.

Shark-fin costumes and “they can swim” (skip)
This slot is a no. A felt fin is a photo. Brachycephalic dogs, seniors, and first-time swimmers need foam and a grab point. Teach the ramp. A senior stack includes exits, not heroics.

- Nobody we would put off a dock
- Skip if
- You like handles and belly straps.

How we scored jackets
The job is stay up and be liftable. We weighted handle, belly support, size charts, and whether the brand is a real site.
We do not score “my Lab swam the channel without one.” Labs still go under boats.
Fit and the water
Girth behind the elbows. The vest should not slide to the ears when you lift the handle on land. Practice in kiddie-pool depth. Rinse after salt. Dry foam.
Puppies outgrow vests like harnesses. Large-breed puppies should not be tired in current as a training plan.
