Best portable dog crates (2026)
A portable crate is a den you can carry. The job is: hotel room, patio, show site, or a week at a relative’s — not “replace a Gunner on I-95.”

The short list
Buy a MidWest-class folding wire if the dog might chew fabric and you still need a collapsible rectangle. Buy a quality soft crate (4knines-class or similar) if the dog is crate-trained and you need it to live in a closet. Buy a compact hard carrier for cabin-sized dogs. Skip using a pop-up as a car seat. Skip buying a portable the week of the trip if the dog has never napped in one — that is the crate-training checklist.

MidWest is the portable default because it folds, it latches, and it is still metal when a Lab tests the door. It is heavier than fabric. It is honest. A divider turns a 48-inch adult plan into a puppy den.

- Most dogs that need a portable rectangle that still feels like a crate
- Skip if
- You needed it to weigh 8 pounds and fit in a backpack.

A heavy soft crate is luggage. Buy one with a steel frame, a floor that wipes, and zippers you can lock. 4knines is a named US brand with car-seat covers in the same family — still not a crash crate. Supervise until you trust the zipper.

- Trained dogs at hotels, shows, and patios when weight is the leak
- Skip if
- The dog is an [aggressive chewer](/reviews/best-dog-toys-aggressive-chewers) unsupervised.
Price note: Quality soft crates often ~$80–$180 by size. Cheap $35 copies are the skip.

- Lighter than wire in a walk-up.
- Collapses into a closet the wire will not.

Petmate-class hard carrier (portable, not cargo crash)
The plastic clamshell is portable in the airline sense. Metal screws if the airline wants them. This overlaps the travel crate ranking on purpose. Here the job is carry-through-security, not cargo-well crash.
- Best for
- Cabin-sized dogs and vet days when you need a clamshell with a door
- Skip if
- You have a 70-pound dog. This is not their portable.

Diggs is the folding hard crate people mean when MidWest looks like a dorm. Fine if the dog is trained and you want it in the living room. Still not a Gunner. Read the current escape and chew language.

- Owners who will pay furniture money for a folding hard den that looks like design
- Skip if
- You needed a $50 wire and a divider.

- Folds flatter than a wire mansion.

Pop-up mesh cubes as car seats (skip)
This slot is a no for cars and unsupervised chewers. A pop-up is a playpen cousin. Fine for a quiet puppy at your feet at a picnic. Not fine as the only travel crate.
- Best for
- Shade on a picnic, not a highway
- Skip if
- You needed a restraint or a chew-proof den.
Price note: Often $25–$45. Use it as shade, not physics.

How we scored portable crates
The job is move the den without lying about crash tests. We weighted fold, weight, chew reality, and a brand that still sells the size.
We do not score “looks like a cabinet.” If you want furniture, buy furniture after the dog sleeps.
