Best lick mats for dogs (2026)
A lick mat is a flat surface you smear with part of a meal so licking takes longer than a bowl. The job is a nail trim, a thunderstorm, or ten minutes of a wet ration. It is not a toothbrush, and it is not a crate toy you leave with a chewer.
We ranked the object US owners mean when they search this, plus the two products that should replace it. Scores are editorial. LickiMat’s own Tuff pages say the mat is chew-resistant, not chew-proof, and that you supervise. Public prices are dated September 22, 2026. Official: lickimat.com. The bowl version of slowing dinner is slow feeders.

The short list
Buy a LickiMat Tuff Soother if you will smear a measured portion and stay in the room. Buy a West Paw Toppl if the dog has already tried to eat a flat mat. Buy a slow-feeder bowl if the job is the whole kibble meal. Skip an unsupervised mat, skip xylitol, and skip counting a smear as “free” calories on top of dinner.
The ranking
01
LickiMat Tuff Soother
LickiMat’s Tuff Soother is a raised surface on a stiffer base. Their product copy says food-grade TPR and polypropylene, dishwasher-safe, freezer-safe, and explicitly not chew-proof. They also say it is not silicone. Use the top rack if your dishwasher’s dry cycle runs very hot. The Soother texture is for yogurt, purée, broth, and a thin smear of dog-safe peanut butter — not a kibble avalanche.
- Best for
- Spreads, purées, and dogs you will supervise the first dozen times
- Skip if
- The dog already swallows silicone, rubber, or fabric, or you needed a silent object for an upstairs apartment at midnight and you will not stay.
Price note: Often about $12–$20 for a Tuff Soother-class mat. As of September 22, 2026.
Why it is here
- The brand that defined the category, with a tougher line for dogs who mouth the classic mat.
- Dishwasher and freezer are the features you will actually use.
Watch-outs
- Chew-resistant is their word. Supervise until you know this dog licks instead of chewing the corner.
- UK and AU shops are easy to find. A US checkout on Chewy or the brand may differ. Buy from a seller you can return to.

02
LickiMat Tuff for grooming and settle time
The same object, used as a station: mat on the floor, dog licking, you handling a paw or a nail grinder. It is not a restraint. If they leave the mat, the session is over. Frozen broth makes it last longer than room-temperature peanut butter. Grooming kits are the rest of the bathroom. A basket muzzle is the tool if the risk is a bite, not boredom.
- Best for
- Nail trims, brushing, and other handling you want to pair with food
- Skip if
- The dog is already over threshold and food is not landing. A mat will not outrank panic.
Price note: Same price band as the Soother. The second mat is so one can be in the freezer.
Why it is here
- Gives handling a food pattern instead of a chase around the tub.
Watch-outs
- Suction stories vary by model. Do not trust a wet mat on a tile wall with a dog who panics.
- Stop if they redirect onto the tool or your hand. That is information.

03
West Paw Toppl (when they eat mats)
The Toppl is rubber you stuff and freeze. It is the exit ramp on our puzzle ranking for dogs who destroy plastic. It is also the exit ramp here. A flat mat has a corner. A determined mouth finds it. Zogoflex survives more of those mouths, and it can go in the dishwasher. It is a noisier, rounder object. That is fine if the job was duration, not a grooming station.
- Best for
- Power chewers and anyone who has already lost a corner of a lick mat
- Skip if
- You specifically need a flat, quiet smear for grooming.
Price note: Commonly about $15–$28.
Why it is here
- A real material for dogs who treat enrichment as a chew.
- Uses the same smear-and-freeze idea without a thin edge.
Watch-outs
- Still supervise a new chewer. Nothing stuffed is a babysitter.
- Calories in the stuffing count against dinner.

04
A slow-feeder bowl (when the job is the meal)
A lick mat is a bad kibble bowl. The ridges hold paste. They do not hold a measured cup of kibble in any way you want to wash. If dinner is the problem, use a slow feeder or a Wobbler. If the problem is gulping wet food, a mat can be right — portion it, do not add it on top of the old bowl.
- Best for
- Kibble or a full wet ration you need to slow down, not a teaspoon of purée
- Skip if
- You are grooming, or the dog already dumps every maze on the floor.
Price note: Maze bowls often about $10–$25. See the slow-feeder ranking for which one.
Why it is here
- Keeps this page from pretending one silicone-or-TPR sheet replaces every feeder.
Watch-outs
- Two products used together means two calorie piles. Pick one vehicle for the meal.

05
An unsupervised mat (skip)
Marketing likes “while you leave for work.” LickiMat’s own durability line says supervise chewers. We are siding with the durability line. A mat is also a calorie bomb if you spread peanut butter like tile grout and then serve full dinner. Xylitol in sugar-free peanut butter is toxic. Read the jar. If they ate a sugar-free product, call a clinic or a poison line. This page is not that call.
- Best for
- Nobody who leaves the room
- Skip if
- You stay, you freeze a thin layer, and you put the mat away after.
Price note: The mat is cheap. An ingested chunk is not.
Why it is here
- Named so the enrichment ad does not become the instructions.
Watch-outs
- Puppies and [aggressive chewers](/reviews/best-dog-toys-aggressive-chewers) get a Toppl or nothing flat.
- Wash it. A sour mat is how you teach them the object is disgusting and the peanut butter is somewhere else in the kitchen.

How we scored lick mats
The job is a few minutes to a short session of licking you can repeat without buying a new mat every week. We weighted washability, an honest chew warning, and a path to a rubber toy or a real bowl when the mat is the wrong shape.
We did not score dental claims. Licking is not brushing. Toothbrushes are the dental aisle.
How to use one without making a mess
Start with a teaspoon of something they already eat, spread thin, you sitting there. Freeze it once they understand the game. If they paw it into the wall, put it on a towel or in a pan. If they bite the edge, the session ends and you look at a Toppl.
Count the smear. A Lab does not need an extra quarter-cup of peanut butter because the mat looked empty. Use part of the measured meal: wet food, pumpkin they already tolerate, or kibble soaked and mashed. New foods get a slow introduction, not a novel fat bomb the night before a boarding drop-off.
Put it away. A mat that lives on the floor is a chew. The same rule as puzzle toys.
