Best pet gates for stairs (2026)
A stair gate is a fall-prevention tool. The job is: keep a puppy, a senior, or a cat off a drop, without turning the landing into a launch ramp under a pressure bar.
We ranked named gates US owners can buy with a published width. Scores are editorial. We did not drop-test toddlers or Labs. Public prices are dated September 20, 2026. Top-of-stairs almost always wants hardware mount. Pressure-mount at the top of stairs is how people learn about gravity.

The short list
Hardware-mount a Carlson- or Cardinal-class gate at the top of the stairs. Use North States or Richell when the width, walk-through, or small-pet door matches the hole you actually measured. Pressure-mount is for hallways, not the top step. Skip retractable mesh you will not tension. Skip a 24-inch “pet” gate under a jumper. Pair seniors with the senior stack and puppies with the crate checklist — a gate is not a personality.

Carlson extra-tall / walk-through gates
Carlson is the pet-aisle default: tall enough for a mid-size jumper, a walk-through adults will use, and extensions that exist. Hardware-mount the top. A pressure bar on the first tread is a hinge into the basement.
- Best for
- Most US stair holes when you will hardware-mount at the top
- Skip if
- You refuse screws in a rental and you have a top-of-stairs drop — then you need a different housing plan, not a wish.

Cardinal Gates (stair-rated hardware)
Cardinal is the gate people buy after a pressure gate walked. Banister kits exist. That is the ranking. Follow the current install sheet. Painted spindles chip — that is adulthood.
- Best for
- Banisters and odd woodwork when you need a brand that talks about stair hardware
- Skip if
- You wanted a $35 pressure gate from a grocery endcap.
Price note: Often ~$70–$130 with banister kits extra.

- Designed for stairs, not borrowed from a play yard.
- A latch you can operate with a laundry basket if you practice.
Watch-outs
- Renters: ask. Screws are the product.

North States wins on weird widths. Hardware-mount at the top. Their pressure gates are for rooms, not the landing. Read the model name; they sell both jobs.
- Best for
- Wide or awkward openings and households that already own their extensions
- Skip if
- The opening is a simple 32-inch hallway and Carlson is in stock.
Price note: Commonly ~$40–$100. Extra-wide kits cost more.
Why it is here
- Width kits that are not a second brand’s maybe.
- Common in US baby/pet aisles — replacements exist.
Watch-outs
- A 28-inch-tall gate is a joke to a standard poodle.

Richell freestanding / room dividers
Richell is the pretty freestanding fence. Fine for a kitchen and a multi-cat feeding station. Not a stair top. Dogs jump freestanding panels. Place them as room dividers, not as a cliff guard.
- Best for
- Open plans and [apartment](/articles/apartment-dog-stack) rooms where you cannot screw a stair newel
- Skip if
- You needed to block the top of a staircase. This is the wrong object.
Price note: Freestanding wood-style gates often ~$80–$180.
Why it is here
- No screws when the job is a room, not a drop.
- Looks like furniture, which is why people actually leave it up.
Watch-outs
- Freestanding + stairs = a sled. Do not.
- Cats climb wood slats for sport.

Pressure-mount at the top of stairs (skip)
This slot is a no. Pressure bars walk. The gate becomes a ramp. Hardware-mount or close the door. Baby-gate Facebook advice that says “we never had a problem” is not a ranking.

How we scored gates
The job is stay put on a drop. We weighted hardware-mount options, height, walk-through, and whether the brand publishes a stair warning.
We do not score “matches the oak.” A pretty gate at the top of the stairs that is pressure-mounted still loses.
Top vs bottom
Top of stairs: hardware-mount, swing away from the drop, latch adults will actually close. Bottom of stairs: pressure can be fine to keep a puppy in the living room.
Measure the opening at the narrowest point. Account for baseboards. A crate plus a gate is how mixed kitten and dog homes survive week one.
