Litter-Robot vs PetSafe ScoopFree is not a trophy fight. One rotates clumping clay into a sealed drawer. The other automates by replacing a crystal tray. If you mash them into one “automatic litter” tab, you will buy the wrong texture for the cat you have.

The short winner
Pick Litter-Robot 4 if you will spend flagship money, your cats accept a globe, and you want clumping clay with a mature US support story.
Pick ScoopFree if you want “automatic” at a lower hardware price, your cats already accept crystals, and you will budget trays like printer ink.
Pick two stainless boxes if you will scoop. That honorable mention still sits on the ranking.
Two machines
Litter-Robot: sensors, a globe, a carbon-filtered drawer, an app, a weight window (publicly a roughly 3–25 lb class story on the 4). You still empty a drawer. You still wash parts. Clay only, as Whisker specifies.
ScoopFree: a rake or tray system built around crystal litter. No spinning planet. Different odor chemistry. Different jam modes. Dogs that eat trays are a baby-gate problem on both.
Mid-range open-top robots are a third lane if the cat hates caves. They are not PetSafe and not Whisker.
Money (September 20, 2026)
LR4 ~$699 plus clay and liners. ScoopFree ~$160–$220 plus trays that add up — in a multi-cat house the tray cadence can approach robot-and-litter money over a year.
If $699 is the whole pet budget, do not finance a globe. Scoop or ScoopFree. If scooping is the household fight, the globe can be rational — same logic as Farmer’s Dog: rank the year, not the unboxing.

The cat’s vote
A cat that refuses caves may skip LR4 and still accept an open tray. A cat that hates crystals will veto ScoopFree in a weekend. Run a backup clumping box during any conversion.
Kittens under published weight gates stay on a regular box. That is safety, not a vibe.
Skip-ifs
Skip LR4 if you refuse clay or $699. Skip ScoopFree if you already own a globe and clay. Skip both if the leak is “not enough boxes.” Read the multi-cat stack.
