A sane multi-cat household stack (2026)
Two cats are not one cat twice. The stack is extra boxes, unscented litter they will share, vertical space so nobody owns the only perch, and a way to feed the skinny one without fattening the thief.
This is for a typical US apartment or house with two to four cats. It is not a feral colony protocol. Dated September 20, 2026. Sudden peeing outside the box is a veterinarian, not a new candle.

Boxes and litter

Put boxes on two floors if you have two floors. A bully sitting on the only hallway box is a social problem.
Vertical and hiding
A studio needs wall shelves more than a 72-inch plush condo. Two stations beat one contested throne. A carrier left out with a towel becomes a hide, not a kidnapping device.
A fountain per floor is cheaper than a urinary crisis. Still not medical advice — straining is an emergency.
Food politics
Free-feeding dry in a group is how the dominant cat balloons. Timed meals or a microchip feeder (SureFeed) are the tools. Wet food still needs a person or a short sit-out window.
Prescription diets for one cat mean a locked room or a chip lid. Do not “share the sensitive bag.”
Skip list
Skip one giant shared tree. Skip scented crystals poured into a globe. Skip adding a third cat because the first two “looked lonely” on camera. A pet camera can show blocking. It cannot hire a mediator.
