Best food for senior cats (2026)
Senior cat food is a calorie, water, and clinic-bag conversation. The job is: a complete diet they will still eat, extra moisture when the veterinarian is happy with it, and whatever renal, thyroid, or GI diet they already named — not a “7+ immune” pouch from a checkout display.

Hill’s Science Diet 7+ / Adult wet + dry
Hill’s 7+ is a calorie and joint-marketing lane, not a prescription. Wet meals sneak water. Dry can stay for grazing if they still have teeth and the clinic is fine with it. Measure — skinny hips are a clinic, not a new protein.

- Older cats with boring labs who still need calories you can count
- Skip if
- The clinic already pulled you into a therapeutic line.

Royal Canin’s aging and indoor lines are complete profiles with a kibble geometry story. Fine. Not finer than Hill’s because the package said 12+. Urinary SKUs are a different page — urinary cat food — and often a clinic sentence.

- Skip if
- You needed the cheapest complete can.

Pro Plan senior and adult complete SKUs are the third default. LiveClear is an allergen-reduction story for people, not a kidney diet. Use one complete food. Do not rotate six gravies because they sniffed.

- OTC complete from a widely available line, including some indoor seniors
- Skip if
- You needed a renal prescription.

How we scored senior cat food
Complete-and-balanced, wet-option, clinic-line neighbor, and whether they will eat it. “Immune” badges scored zero. We did not run a geriatric trial.
Labs beat the bag age
Hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and dental pain all look like “picky senior.” Blood and urine first. Then the bag. Senior cat stack for boxes and stairs. A low box they can enter matters more than a crest can if they are soiling.
Weight: too thin is urgent; too fat is joint and liver load. Insurance may already be ugly — self-insure if you will keep the cash. Not a veterinarian.
