Best cat food for urinary health (2026)
Urinary cat food is a clinic-bag conversation. The job is: the therapeutic diet they named after urine and imaging, extra water if they want it, and a box they will use. It is not a “urinary care” grocery pouch, a cranberry chew, or a crystal litter you treated as a lab.

Hill’s Prescription Diet urinary SKUs (c/d-class)
Hill’s urinary therapeutic line is a default US clinic bag. Wet helps water. Dry exists if they will only crunch and the veterinarian is fine with it. Multicare vs other SKUs is a clinic pick, not a Facebook flavor.

- Households already in the Hill’s hospital aisle
- Skip if
- They wrote a different brand’s urinary diet.

Royal Canin Urinary SO-class
SO-class is the other default therapeutic. Loaf vs gravy is palatability, not a better crystal. Stay on the diet after they look fine — “he’s cured” is how people buy a second blockage.

- Cats that already eat Royal Canin and will finish the can
- Skip if
- The clinic wrote Hill’s or Purina.

UR-class is the third US clinic family. Fine. Not finer because the logo is a different color. Autoship once authorized. LiveClear and grocery “urinary care” are not this slot.

OTC “urinary care” pouches and cranberry (skip)
This slot is a no as a protocol. Straining, crying in the box, or a male who stops passing urine is a clinic now. PrettyLitter color is not a culture. Odor litter is smell, not medicine.

How we scored urinary food
Named therapeutic line, wet option, repurchase, and whether we told you to go to the ER. Grocery badges scored zero. We did not dissolve your stone from a keyboard. Not a veterinarian.
The ER vs the bag
Males who strain and produce nothing can die the same day. Do not shop. Go. After they are unblocked, the bag is how you try not to return. Imaging and urine decide stone type; diets are not interchangeable folklore. A leftover SO can is not a calcium-oxalate plan if they named something else.
First-year cat cost should include a blockage buffer even on a “cheap cat.” Insurance is a finance product you quote before the night. Self-insure only if the cash is real.
Water, boxes, and stress
Water is the other half. Wet food, a fountain some cats like, and bowls they will use. A dirty or covered box they hate is how they hold urine — odor litter, n+1 boxes in a multi-cat house, a mat so they do not boycott the room.
Stress is a FLUTD trigger. Intro two cats slowly. Indoor enrichment so they hunt something that is not your ankle. A Litter-Robot they boycott is a $699 reason they hold it. Keep a cheap pan they already use.
Senior cats can have kidney and urinary stories at once. Do not stack three diets. Ask which job wins this year.
