Best cat DNA tests (2026)
A cat DNA test is a swab and a report. It can flag variants a veterinarian might care about and sketch breed similarity. It cannot tell you the shelter tabby is 40% Egyptian Mau in a way you should put on a pedigree. It cannot replace an exam.
We ranked kits US owners can buy without a clinic account. Scores are editorial. We did not re-run their arrays. Public kit prices are dated September 20, 2026. Basepaws is the cat DNA brand people mean. They are explicit that this is not a pedigree verification test. Breed similarity across a smaller published set (they have discussed ~21 breed types) is the entertainment. Health and trait markers are why it sits here. Turnaround is often longer than Wisdom’s public 2–3 weeks — budget 4–6 if their current page says so.

- Skip if
- You needed Wisdom’s broader breed database pitch and a 2–3 week clock.

The honorable mention is the test your veterinarian orders. That can be the right object for a known breed risk. It is not this ranking’s shopping-cart winner because most readers wanted a box on the porch.

How we scored cat DNA kits
The job is a health-marker list you can show a veterinarian plus a company that still exists. We weighted published condition counts, breed-claim honesty, and turnaround language.
We do not score “most exotic” pie charts. Domestic cats cluster. That is biology, not a failed kit.
What a swab cannot do
It cannot age a cat, diagnose HCM, or replace a dental. It cannot settle a multi-cat fight. It cannot tell you to skip vaccines.
If the report flags something, book the clinic. If it flags nothing and the cat is sick, still book the clinic. Kitten stack first; swab later.
