An outdoor-cat safety stack (2026)
Outdoor cat safety is a containment and ID problem. The job is: if the cat goes out, they come back, they are findable, and they are current on what the clinic wants — not a GPS charm and a prayer.
This stack is for US households already letting a cat out, or building a catio, or training a harness. Indoor-only is a valid choice and often the lower-risk one; we will not moralize it. Dated September 20, 2026. Cars, coyotes, and other cats are not a product ranking. Not a veterinarian.

Ways outside
A catio or screened porch is the adult version of “they like sun.” Hardware cloth, a roof, and a door you latch beat a DIY net that sags. A stroller is optional after they like a harness.
Harness walks: train indoors. Escape artists need a backup ID. Consumer GPS for cats exists; it is not a Fi dog collar and not a substitute for a chip. We will not invent a cat-GPS ranking here.
Free-roam is the highest-risk option. If you still choose it: night curfew, flea/tick is a dog page — ask the clinic for cat products, never dog pipettes. Fight wounds and limps are emergencies.
First-time owners should default indoor plus a window perch or tree before they invent a night shift.
Skip list
Skip dog flea products. Skip a non-breakaway collar that can hang. Skip essential-oil “predator sprays.” Skip letting a kitten out “to learn.” Skip a wireless dog fence as a cat plan.
Skip delaying a chip because a collar exists. Collars come off.
