Best cat scratching posts (2026)
A scratching post is furniture the cat is allowed to ruin. The job is: a full vertical stretch, a base that does not tip, and a texture they will use instead of the arm of the couch.
We ranked posts and pads US owners can buy from a brand site, with a skip-if on 24-inch carpet tubes. Scores are editorial. We did not run a claw lab. Public prices are dated September 20, 2026. A post is not a cat tree — trees add perches; posts do the scratch job cheaper if that is the leak.

Buy a SmartCat Ultimate-class 32-inch sisal post if you want one tall object that does not wobble. Buy Catit or a second horizontal cardboard if the cat already prefers a flat scratch. Buy a small-apartment tree when you need height and a perch in one footprint. Skip 2-foot “posts” that tip when a 12-pound cat leans. Skip carpet-wrapped tubes that teach them the hallway runner is fair game.

The Ultimate is the post people mean: 32 inches, sisal, a wide two-piece base. Height is the feature. A cat that cannot stretch will pick the sofa arm. Stability is why it sits first — a tipping post trains them to skip it.

- Most households that need a tall, stable sisal post the cat can fully stretch on
- Skip if
- The cat only uses horizontal cardboard and you already have two.

Catit scratchers (post + cardboard)
Catit is the catalog that also sells fountains. Scratchers here are competent. Buy the shape the cat already votes for. A Flower fountain does not scratch; do not bundle them as one job.
- Best for
- Owners who want a cat-first brand with both vertical and horizontal options
- Skip if
- You needed one 32-inch sisal and Catit’s current SKU is a toy-height tube.

Horizontal corrugated cardboard (SmartCat / Catit-class)
Many cats are horizontal scratchers. A corrugated pad next to the couch is cheaper than a tree and more honest than a 20-inch tube. Put one at each sofa. This is also the kitten stack week-one scratcher.
- Best for
- Cats that already scratch the rug or a flat box, and as a second station
- Skip if
- The sofa arm is vertical and you only bought a pizza-box scratcher.

A small-apartment cat tree with a sisal trunk
A tree wins when height plus scratch is the job. It loses when the trunks are carpet and the platforms wobble. Read that ranking. Do not buy a 6-foot condo as a first scratcher for a kitten that still fits in a shoe.

- Studios that need a perch and a scratch in one footprint
- Skip if
- You only needed a $40 post and you already have a window seat.

This slot is a no. A 24-inch carpet post that walks across the room is a toy, not a scratcher. Buy height and sisal.

- Nobody whose sofa is still intact
- Skip if
- You like a full stretch and a base that stays put.

How we scored posts
The job is stretch plus stability plus a texture they will use. We weighted height, base, sisal vs carpet, and whether a replacement exists.
We do not score “matches the mid-century chair.” A pretty wobbly post still loses.
Placement is the product
Put the post where they already scratch — sofa corner, bedroom door, the runner. Then add a second. Cats mark territory; one lonely post in the unused dining room is a decoration.
Nail caps and tape are management, not a substitute. A first-time cat house still needs the post on day one, not after the linen chair dies.
