A hiking-dog gear stack (2026)
Hiking gear for a dog is water, identification, and a way to keep them on the trail — not a catalog of RGB collars. The job is: they finish the miles you planned, they are findable if they bolt, and your back is optional.
This stack assumes a conditioned adult, not a large-breed puppy you are using as a pack mule. Dated September 20, 2026. Parks have leash rules. Heat kills. We are not a ranger.

Miles and weather
Condition them like you condition yourself. Start shorter than your ego. Rain shells for wet brush; life jackets for real water, not a puddle. A seat cover for the ride home.
Heat: dawn, pads, water, shade. Brachycephalics and dark coats are the skip-if for noon. Cold: boots and a coat for short-coated dogs. Night: a light on you and on them.
Food: their normal calories plus a bit if the miles are real. Do not debut Ollie on a saddle. A stuffed Kong is a camp job, not a switchback.
Skip list
Skip retractable leashes on cliffs. Skip a full pack on a puppy. Skip “they’ll follow” next to a trailhead parking lot. Skip new boots on the summit day — hallway first.
Skip a wireless fence as a wilderness plan. Skip leaving them in a closed car while you “just do the overlook.”
