Best dog raincoats (2026)
A dog raincoat is a shell, not a fashion week. The job is: keep the short-coated or skinny dog dry enough to finish the walk, with a belly strap that stays put and a hole that matches the harness you already own.
We ranked coats US owners can buy from a brand site. Scores are editorial. We did not hose-test seam tape in a lab. Public prices are dated September 20, 2026. A raincoat is not a winter boot and not a life jacket.

The short list
Buy a Hurtta or Ruffwear rain shell if you will measure back length and you walk in real weather. Buy a cheaper named coat if the dog only sees drizzle and you will still use a belly strap. Skip human-baby ponchos and “one size” Amazon slickers that ride up. Skip a coat as a substitute for a towel and ear care on a floppy-eared swimmer — that is a clinic if things smell. Double coats often need less clothing, not more.

Hurtta cuts for a dog body. Belly coverage and a collar that actually sheds water are why it sits first. Measure the back. A coat that ends at the ribs is a shirt.

Kurgo is competent weather for a city block. Fine with their car gear. Not a storm shell. Belly strap still required.

- Weekend drizzle and owners already in the Kurgo aisle
- Skip if
- You hike in sideways rain and will pay for Hurtta.

A high-viz pack cover or lightweight shell
Visibility is a real job. A light shell plus a light beats a black fleece nobody can see. Not a substitute for a raincoat when the sky opens.

- Dawn walkers who need to be seen more than fully dry
- Skip if
- The job is a soaked belly on a 40°F sidewalk.

This slot is a no. A poncho that sails in wind and covers the eyes is a costume. Measure, then buy a dog shell.

- Nobody whose harness sits under a trash bag
- Skip if
- You like a belly strap and a measured back length.

How we scored raincoats
The job is dry-enough plus stay-on. We weighted belly coverage, harness compatibility, and a brand that publishes a size chart.
We do not score “cute hood.” Hoods that block vision lose.
Fit and the harness hole
Measure back length from collar to tail set. Girth behind the elbows. Put the harness on first if that is how you walk — puppy harness included.
Double-coated breeds often do better with a towel than a sauna. Short-coated, skinny, and seniors are the yes cases.
