Is Tractive worth it in 2026?
Tractive is worth it when you want a GPS tag you can move between collars, you will charge it on a schedule, and you accept that live tracking spends the battery. It is not worth it as a cheaper Fi with the same months-class battery story, as a no-subscription brick, or as a substitute for a latch.

Verdict
Worth it: a travel kit you clip onto whichever dog is coming, a first tracker when Fi’s collar is not the form factor, a household that will put the tag on a charge puck every few days. Not worth it: you wanted to forget the device for three months; you will not pay the plan; the dog leaves a rural edge and you will discover a dead battery in the field.
Tractive is honest about live tracking draining the radio. That honesty is why it sits on our GPS list and why it is not the default for every escape artist. Charge it like a phone you care about.
What you are buying
A clip-on GPS + LTE (confirm today’s SKU) plus a subscription. Hardware without a plan is a plastic weight. Live mode is the “find them now” button and the battery tax. History and fences live in the app if you open it.
The clip is a failure point. Check it like a leash snap. A light-duty clip on a puller is how you buy a tracker in a storm drain. Pair with a real collar, a chip, and a tag. GPS is not ID.
Cats: weight, breakaway, and outdoor risk are different — outdoor cat safety. Indoor-only may want a perch more than LTE.
The money (September 21, 2026)
Hardware often about $40–$60 on promotions; street can be higher. Subscriptions commonly about $5–$10/month depending on plan and term. Multi-year bundles look cheaper and are a cancel-if if you will not use year two. Fi hardware is commonly about $149-class plus about $99/year. AirTag is about $29 plus a holder.
First-year dog can wait on any GPS if the door latches. Escape-prone rescues are why people buy a tracker in week one. The cheap hardware is not cheap if you lose the dog because it was dead.

Vs Fi, Whistle, AirTag
Fi wins the long battery and a collar-native module — Mini vs Series 3 if the neck is small. Whistle wins if you will use health history — Fi vs Whistle. AirTag wins as a Bluetooth crumb in a dense iPhone city and loses the moment they leave that bubble.
Tractive wins the clip-on and the lower hardware sticker. It loses if you will not charge. Do not stack three subscriptions. Pick the radio you will keep funded.
Test it on a known walk before you trust an escape. Confirm the map updates, the fence alert fires, and you can hear the live-track tax on the battery. A tracker you never opened after unboxing is jewelry with a nicer logo. Put the charge puck next to the leash hook so the ritual is stupid-simple.
Skip-ifs
Skip if you wanted Fi’s charge cadence. Skip if you will not pay the plan. Skip a light clip on a freight-train neck. Skip as the only plan on a rural road with no chip.
