A sane multi-dog household stack (2026)
A second dog is not “half off” on gear. It is a second bowl, a second bed, a second poop-bag math problem, and a gate for the days they cannot share a hallway. The household needs duplicates of the objects that cause fights — food, rest, exits — not a 40-item “sibling” registry.
This stack is for a typical US home adding a dog or already living with two or three. It is not a behavior protocol and not a reason to skip a veterinarian if someone is suddenly guarding a bowl. Dated September 20, 2026. The cat cousin is multi-cat. Not a veterinarian.

Food and water
Free-feeding two dogs is how the fast one gets fat and the polite one gets thin. Separate rooms or crates at meals. An automatic feeder can split schedules; it cannot referee. Fresh subscriptions — Chewy Fresh, JustFoodForDogs — multiply by head count. Quote that before you add a logo for “the picky one.”
Allergy or prescription food on one dog is a management project: the other dog will steal it. Allergy ranking. Training treats come out of each dog’s budget, not a shared jar you dump.
Water: two bowls or a large fountain plus a backup dish. Guarding a fountain is a real hobby. A second station is cheaper than a fight.
Space, walks, car
Two reactive dogs on one flexible leash is a documentary we do not want to watch. Two six-foot leashes, two harnesses, and a human who will walk them separately when the day is loud. A gate at the door stops a double bolt.
Car: two restraints or a crate plan that is not “they can share the cargo well loose.” A seat cover is dirt. It is not physics. Portable crates help travel days.
ID: two chips, two tags. GPS is per dog if either can leave. Insurance is per dog; a multi-pet discount is a maybe, not a plan. A sitter needs both flea dates and both food notes.
Skip list
Skip one giant bed as a peace treaty. Skip one walk harness stretched across two necks. Skip “they’ll work it out” over a marrow bone. Skip stacking three calming chews on the household because one dog hates the mail.
