Best automatic feeders for dogs (2026)
An automatic feeder is a motor and a schedule. It is not a nutritionist. The job is: portion kibble when a human is late, keep the cat out of the dog bowl, or split calories so a Lab does not inhale breakfast at 6:01.

Buy a PETLIBRO- or PetSafe-class wifi feeder if you feed dry kibble, you will still weigh the daily ration, and you want timed meals — not free-feed. Buy SureFeed if the job is locking one pet out of another pet’s bowl. Skip automatic feeders for wet food unless the SKU is built for it. Skip them entirely if the dog guards food or you have not fixed the diet yet. A $30 cam (pet cameras) plus a person is more honest than a jammed hopper while you are on a flight.

PETLIBRO is the named example of the wifi kibble hopper people actually buy. The product is a schedule and a portion number you set. The skip-if is trusting the app more than the bag’s calories. Fresh food from Farmer’s Dog does not live here.

PetSafe is the store-shelf version of the same job. Programmable meals, a hopper, a lid. Fine if you already own their ScoopFree or Easy Walk and want one app family. Still dry kibble only on most SKUs.

- People who want a pet-brand hopper they can find in a store
- Skip if
- You need a microchip-locked bowl for a multi-pet thief.

- Retail return window if the motor dies in week two.
- Parts and manuals are easier to find than a no-name Amazon hopper.

SureFeed microchip feeder
SureFeed is a different machine: a lid that opens for the programmed pet. That is the multi-cat / dog-and-cat job in the multi-cat stack. It is not a six-meal scheduler for a Lab. Do not buy it as a wifi hopper.
- Best for
- Multi-pet homes where one animal steals the other’s calories
- Skip if
- You have one dog and no cat, and you only wanted a timer.
Price note: Commonly about $150–$180. Bowls and RFID are the product.

- Stops the thief without a baby-gate empire.
- Works with wet food better than most auger hoppers.

Simple timed feeder (no camera, no app)
A clock and a split tray is enough for many senior dogs. Fewer failure modes. You cannot “just add a meal” from a taxi. That is a feature.

- Seniors on a schedule when wifi is the leak, not the feature
- Skip if
- You wanted remote treats and a livestream.

Treat-toss cameras as feeders (honorable skip)
Treat tossers are cameras. They are a terrible dinner plan. Calories become a slot machine. Rank them on the camera list, not here.

How we scored feeders
The job is reliable dry-food portions or a locked bowl. We weighted jam stories, backup power, and whether wet/fresh food is honestly out of scope.
We do not score “AI portioning.” The bag has a cup. Use a scale.
Calories are still your job
An obese dog on an automatic feeder is still an obese dog. Split the daily ration. Growing puppies and allergy diets need a person watching stool, not just a hopper.
Fresh subscriptions do not pour. Do not buy a feeder to “solve” Farmer’s Dog.
Who should skip a feeder
Resource guarders, dogs that need meds in food with a human present, wet-food-only houses, and anyone who will not clean a hopper. A jammed feeder on day two of a trip is why sitters exist — see is Rover worth it.
