A puppy-proofing apartment stack (2026)
Puppy-proofing an apartment is management, not a Pinterest closet. The job is: the land shark cannot eat a charger, open the trash, or practice stairs you have not trained — while you still live in the rooms.
This stack sits next to the new puppy, apartment dog, and crate checklist pages. Dated September 20, 2026. A cute camera is optional; a closed bedroom door is not.

The stack
Contain first. Decorate later.
| Object | Job | Skip-if |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware or pressure gate (not top-of-stairs pressure) | Close the kitchen / hallway | You have a studio and will use an x-pen |
| Crate + divider + washable pad | Off-duty hours | You already have the [portable](/reviews/best-portable-dog-crates) plan |
| Covered trash + latching bin | Diapers, bones, chocolate | You enjoy foreign-body surgery |
| Cord covers / power strip boxes | Chargers are jerky | You already lift every cable |
| Enzymatic cleaner + a towel stack | The carpet will test you | You have no carpet and no illusions |
| A [scratch-safe] chew rotation | Not the baseboard | See [chew toys](/reviews/best-dog-toys-aggressive-chewers) |
Room by room
Kitchen: trash latch, no food on the coffee table, stove knobs if they jump. A slow feeder does not replace a closed pantry. Automatic feeders wait until the schedule exists.
Bathroom: toilet lid, razor, meds. Laundry: close the door or lose a sock (and maybe a surgery).
Stairs: hardware-mount at the top. Elevators are a leash job, not an off-leash meet-and-greet. Balconies: no jump-height furniture; screens are not fences. A wireless fence is the wrong object for a third-floor rail.
Night: crate near you. Puppy bed pad, not furniture foam. Day: camera optional if you will watch; a sitter still wins a 10-hour office — Rover.
