Best dog exercise pens (2026)
An exercise pen is a foldable fence for a dog you can still see. It is a place to be during a call, a visitor, or a puppy’s first week. It is not a crate, and it is not a yard.
We ranked the pens US buyers mean: a metal MidWest panel pen, a top for a jumper, a soft travel pen, and the crate you should buy instead when the job is “I am leaving.” Scores are editorial. The short list
Buy a MidWest exercise pen with a door, in a height the dog cannot hop, if you will be in the room. Add a top if they are a climber and the pen is outside or in a hall. Buy a short canopy pen only for a small dog on a trip. Skip an x-pen as overnight containment, and skip a pen with no plan for the floor they will chew.

MidWest exercise pen with a door
The usual MidWest pen is eight panels, about 24 inches wide each, with a door on the models you should buy. Heights run from about 24 inches for small dogs up to about 48 inches for dogs who think 36 inches is a suggestion. Fully opened it is on the order of 16 square feet if you make the octagon. It folds. It includes stakes for grass. On a wood floor you want the corner pieces so the wire is not the only thing touching the finish.
- Best for
- Puppies and calm adults who need a few square feet while you are home
- Skip if
- The dog jumps higher than the panel, chews wire, or you needed a locked crate for an eight-hour absence.
Price note: Retailers often about $50–$130 depending on height. The brand’s own shop lists higher, into the $110–$200 band. Match the height, then the price. As of September 23, 2026.
Why it is here
- The shape people can actually reconfigure around a desk or a whelping-free living room.
- A door beats climbing in and out over a rail with a puppy in your arms.
Watch-outs
- Height charts on reseller pages are optimistic. If the dog’s shoulders are near the top, buy taller or buy a crate.
- Wire is a chew. A puppy who mouths the panel does not get the pen as a solo project.

The same pen, plus a top
MidWest sells wire tops and shade tops for these pens. A top turns a pen into a box a climber has to think about. It does not turn the pen into a crate you can leave. Outside, shade matters — a hot-weather stack still applies. Stakes matter on grass. A pen on a deck with a gap at the bottom is a pen the dog will find.

- Jumpers and outdoor setups where a deer, a kid, or an open gate is the risk
- Skip if
- You are indoors, the dog has never hopped a baby gate, and a top would only make you skip supervision.

Carlson portable pen with a canopy
Carlson’s portable pen is a lighter, shorter yard: on the order of 48 inches across and 26 inches tall, with a canopy on the deluxe version. PetSmart lists it as indoor/outdoor, with mesh and a zip door. It is a small-dog object. A camping trip can use it as a shaded spot next to you. It cannot hold a dog who has decided to leave.
- Best for
- Small dogs, camping trips, and a weekend where a metal octagon will not fit in the car
- Skip if
- The dog is medium or large, a jumper, or a chewer of fabric.
Price note: Often about $120 at PetSmart for the canopy model around 26 inches high.

- Twenty-six inches is a step for a lot of dogs. Read the height before you trust a product photo.

A crate, when the job is leaving
MidWest also makes crates. Use one. A pen has gaps, a door that is only as good as the latch you checked, and no answer for a dog who spends the afternoon eating the baseboard just outside the wire. Crate training is the skill. Puppy pads are a different tool and a messy one. If the dog panics in any enclosure, the pen will not be the gentle version. That is a trainer conversation, not a taller panel.

- Sleep, potty training, and any hour you cannot see the dog
- Skip if
- You are sitting next to the pen and the dog is already calm in that smaller fence.

An unattended pen (skip)
A pen is management while you watch. Puppies still need a potty plan on a clock, not a hope that the corner of the octagon becomes a bathroom. Adult dogs with separation problems will rehearse barking at the panels. A bark collar is not the missing part. Exercise before the pen, a short session, and a person in the room are the missing parts.

- Nobody who leaves the house
- Skip if
- You are home, the height is honest, and the floor inside the pen is something you can clean.

How we scored exercise pens
The job is a few hours of visible containment you can fold and store. We weighted a real door, a height you can defend, and a written exit to a crate when you leave.
We did not score “keeps any breed.” Panel height is physics. A photo of a sitting puppy is not a jump test.
How to use one without a jailbreak
Assemble it once while the dog is elsewhere. Check every hinge. Put water in a bowl that does not become a toy, a chew they already know, and nothing they can pull through the wire from the coffee table.
Practice in the same room before you rely on it for a work call. If they scream, you are too early. The apartment dog stack assumes the neighbors exist.
For a new rescue, a pen can be the first boundary. It is not the first night’s only plan if they are not crate-safe and not pen-safe. Someone stays up.
