Best dog food for senior dogs (2026)
Senior dog food is a calorie and clinic conversation. The job is a complete diet an older dog will still finish, at a portion that matches a slower life — not a “7+ joint and brain” bag that replaces an exam.
We ranked foods US owners can repurchase, with an AAFCO complete-and-balanced statement you can read, and a skip-if that is not “if you love your dog.” Scores are editorial. We did not run a feeding trial. Public prices are dated September 22, 2026. The house checklist is the senior dog stack. If the veterinarian already named a renal, GI, or hydrolyzed diet, that bag wins this list.

Buy the therapeutic diet the clinic named. If labs are boring and the dog is simply older, buy Purina Pro Plan Adult 7+ or Bright Mind as the default senior maintenance bag, Hill’s Science Diet Adult 7+ if your clinic already talks that language, or a Royal Canin mature size recipe if kibble geometry is the constraint. Skip joint chews sold as dinner, grain-free “senior” halos, and any plan that treats a first-box discount as the price. Fresh rolls are a separate job — is Freshpet worth it.

The veterinary therapeutic diet (when named)
This slot is first because “senior” on a grocery bag is not a renal diet and not a hydrolyzed diet. If the clinic wrote a food, that is dinner. Do not “balance” it with a joint chew and a different protein. Royal Canin vs Hill’s and Pro Plan vs Hill’s are the OTC argument — they are not a second opinion on a prescription.

Purina Pro Plan Adult 7+ / Bright Mind
Pro Plan’s 7+ and Bright Mind recipes are the default we would put in a kitchen where the dog is older and the bloodwork is unremarkable. Purina publishes a cognitive-support story around Bright Mind. That is a company research claim, not a treatment for canine cognitive dysfunction and not a reason to skip a neurologic exam. Measure the calories. Skinny hips are a clinic visit, not a new protein.
- Best for
- Healthy older dogs when you want a senior maintenance bag you can find at a normal store
- Skip if
- The clinic already pulled you into a therapeutic line, or you refuse Purina on principle.

- Easy to repurchase when you travel or the usual store is out.
- A senior maintenance line from a company that talks about feeding trials in public.

Hill’s Science Diet Adult 7+
Science Diet Adult 7+ is the other waiting-room senior bag. It is not more magic than Pro Plan. It is a coherent life-stage line with a company that publishes a lot of clinical nutrition material. Wet can sneak water in for dogs that drink poorly — that is moisture, not a kidney treatment.
- Best for
- Owners whose clinic already uses Hill’s language and who want the OTC neighbor of a prescription wall
- Skip if
- You are shopping only on first-ingredient romance, or a therapeutic Hill’s bag is already on the counter.
Price note: Large dry bags often about $55–$95. Canned 7+ is a separate, wetter bill.

Royal Canin mature / senior size recipes
Royal Canin’s mature and senior size recipes are complete profiles with a kibble-geometry story. Fine. Not finer than Hill’s or Pro Plan because the bag said 8+. You are paying for a split, not for a farm video. If the dog is a giant who already eats the matching adult size recipe and is doing well, do not switch for a birthday.

- Dogs already on Royal Canin, or a jaw that needs the size-split kibble
- Skip if
- You want the cheaper complete bag, or you needed a prescription renal diet.

Joint-chew “senior” bags and grain-free halos (skip)
This slot is a no. A glucosamine sprinkle is not a pain plan. Grain-free is not a senior virtue — see grain-free vs grain-inclusive. If the label is not complete and balanced for the life stage, it is not dinner. Pain, drinking a lot, and losing weight are clinic problems. The senior stack already says to skip three joint chews stacked.

- Almost nobody who will use this as the only food
- Skip if
- You like a complete-and-balanced statement and a company you can call.

How we scored senior dog food
The job is a complete diet you can keep buying after the dog slows down. We weighted life-stage labeling, whether a veterinarian can recognize the company, repurchase, and a skip-if that separates “healthy and older” from “the clinic already named a diet.”
We did not invent digestibility scores or joint-cure claims. Stool, itch, and weight are n-of-1. Transition over several days. If the dog is sick, call the clinic and bring the bag.
Labs beat the bag age
“Senior” is not a birthday. Giants age earlier than toy dogs. Bloodwork is what tells you whether a retail 7+ bag is fine or whether a therapeutic diet is the actual food. We will not tell you to start a kidney diet because the dog turned eight.
Calories usually need to come down. That can be the same adult recipe, measured, if the dog is doing well — you do not owe the aisle a new bag. When you do switch, use the feeding guide and the clinic’s weight checks, not a meme.
A ramp and a bed solve jumps. They do not fix a diet the veterinarian already changed.

Pro Plan and Science Diet large bags still live in a similar neighborhood. Royal Canin size recipes usually cost more. Fresh subscriptions are a different math — Farmer’s Dog and Ollie can be worth a quote if the dog will eat them and you can afford month six. They are not pain medicine.
