Is Freshpet worth it in 2026?
Freshpet is worth it when you want a refrigerated, complete dog-food roll from a grocery or pet-store fridge, you have the space to keep it cold, and you will portion by calories instead of by how a slice looks.

Verdict
Worth it: dogs who eat it, households that already shop the fridge case, owners who will read which recipe is adult maintenance and which one says all life stages.
Not worth it: a tiny fridge, a travel month, a puppy unless that exact roll’s AAFCO statement covers growth (including large-breed growth if that is the dog), or anyone who wanted a custom mailed plan.
Not a treatment. If the clinic named a therapeutic diet, the roll loses. See senior dog food for that fork.
What you are buying
A steam-cooked roll you slice, kept refrigerated, used within 7 days of opening on Freshpet’s own storage instructions. They say you can freeze it, and that texture can change after thawing. That is the logistics. “Human-grade” adjectives are not the logistics.
Recipes are not interchangeable. Freshpet’s Complete Nutrition chicken roll is labeled to meet AAFCO profiles for adult maintenance. Their multi-protein chicken, beef, egg, and salmon roll is labeled for all life stages, including growth of large-size dogs. Vital beef-and-lamb is labeled for adult dogs. Vital turkey is labeled for all life stages. Those are the statements on their pages — buy the roll that matches the dog, not the picture.
The food is wet. Several rolls publish on the order of 300 kcal per half pound; the turkey recipe’s published figure is higher, about 365 kcal per half pound. You will feed more volume than kibble for the same calories. Guessing “one slice” is how dogs gain weight.
The money (September 22, 2026)
Rolls show up as 1.5 lb tubes and larger boxes, plus bigger Vital rolls. Retail prices move by store and club pack. A medium dog can go through more than one small roll a week because the food is mostly water — moisture on those labels is often in the mid-to-high 70 percent range. Do the kcal math before you call it cheaper than a subscription.
Against kibble, Freshpet usually costs more per day. Against a full Farmer’s Dog or Ollie plan, the fridge roll is often the lower bill and the less personal one. You lose the calorie plan they build for that dog. You gain “it is in the case at the store I already drive to.”
There is no subscription you are required to keep. There is also no one mailing you the next box when you forget. Buttons, if we add them, stay on the official site until a real partner ID exists.

When it is worth it
The dog likes it and the stool stays boring. You can keep the roll cold at home and in a cooler on the way home. You will use a scale or their feeding guide, not a vibe. You are feeding an adult, or you have checked that this SKU’s life-stage statement covers your puppy.
It is also a reasonable bridge if you want to try fresh texture before you commit to The Farmer’s Dog vs Ollie. A roll is a smaller experiment than a monthly plan.
When it is not worth it
You travel and the dog stays with someone who will leave the roll out. You wanted grain-free as a personality — read the recipe; several include rice and oats, and we do not treat grain-free as an upgrade anyway (grain-free vs grain-inclusive).
The dog has a diagnosed condition and a clinic diet. The dog is a large-breed puppy and you grabbed an adult-maintenance roll. You will not portion it. Those are skip-ifs, not moral failures. Go back to a measured kibble.
