Verdict
Worth it: one- to four-cat homes that will pay flagship money to empty a sealed drawer, will use clump Whisker wants, and will wash parts.
Not worth it: a kitten under the weight line; $699 is the whole pet budget; scooping is not the leak — the leak is a dirty box in a closet they hate. Then buy a better open box and litter.

What you are buying
A rotating globe, a sensor story, a drawer, an app, and a brand that also wants you on their litter. You still buy clump. You still have a mat. You still need a second box in multi-cat politics — multi-cat stack.
Last-gen units on the used market are a different warranty. Read the current LR4 page, not a 2019 blog. Whisker is the company name; Litter-Robot is the machine. Buying “a robot” from a marketplace gray listing is how you lose the app and the fence in the same week.
The cycle is: cat leaves, globe waits, clump drops, you empty a drawer. That is the product. “Never scoop again” is the ad. A dirty globe you will not wash is a $699 boycott.
The money (September 20, 2026)
LR4 commonly $699. Bundles, fences, and litter hoppers cost more. Litter is a forever invoice — Autoship it. Whisker+ is optional extras: graphs, extra support language, sometimes discounts. It is not a UTI monitor.
A furniture enclosure on top can void airflow. Read clearance. PetSafe ScoopFree is a different, cheaper job — crystal trays, not a globe. Compare them on Whisker vs PetSafe, not on which unboxing was prettier.
Year-one neighborhood for a one-cat home is often the machine plus a few hundred in litter and a mat. Year two is litter and any replacement liner or filter the current page names. If $699 is the whole pet budget, buy a large open box and scoop.

When it is worth it
You scoop poorly and you know it. You have the floor space and a path to a trash can. The cats already use a box you can swap, and they clear the published weight line. You read the automatic ranking and you will empty the drawer on a cadence an apartment neighbor cannot smell.
Two-to-four cat homes that feud still need a second box. The robot can be one of them. It cannot be the peace treaty.
When it is not worth it
A first cat on day one. A kitten under the line. You wanted a $150 covered box. The dog eats litter — gate it. A senior cat that already fails a step. The leak is a dirty closet they hate, not scoop time.
If you will not wash the globe, do not buy the globe.
