A litter mat is a doormat with a better story. The job is: catch granules before they tour the apartment, then dump them back, without becoming a claw trap or a pee sponge you will never wash.

The short list
Buy a double-layer honeycomb mat if you will empty the pockets weekly and the cat does not pick at mesh. Buy a Catit or named rubber scraper if you want a brand that also sells boxes. Skip deep shag that holds ammonia. Skip a postage-stamp mat in front of a jumbo box. Apartment cats need the mat larger than the exit path.

Honeycomb is the default because granules fall through and you pour them back. Size up. A mat smaller than the landing is decoration. Wash it — a dirty honeycomb is a litter box annex.

- The cat claws mesh for sport or you refuse to empty pockets.

Catit is the brand we already trust for fountains. Their mats are competent rubber/scraper designs. Buy the width of the box, not a welcome-mat leftover.

A heavier rubber tray does not walk. That is the feature. Same company family as the Ultimate post. Fine under a large-cat tree if they also toilet nearby — they should not.

The honorable mention is a washable runner you expected to launder. Better than spreading gravel for 20 feet. Worse at recycling litter into the box.

The job is catch plus dump plus wash. We weighted size, claw safety, and whether the material becomes a third box.
Placement
Under the exit, not beside it. Two doors on a cabinet need two mats or one huge one. Keep food and fountains away. First-time owners: buy the mat with the box, not after the hallway turns beige.
