Best cat food for indoor cats (2026)
Indoor cat food is for a cat who lives inside and will gain weight if you free-feed a calorie-dense bag. The useful version also adds fiber aimed at hairballs. The useless version is the word “indoor” on a sack you leave down all day.

Buy a complete indoor adult from Hill’s Science Diet, a Purina indoor recipe, or Royal Canin Indoor, and measure it. Add wet food or a fountain so dry is not the only water plan. Buy the clinic bag if they named weight, urinary, or GI disease. Skip kitten and “all life stages” free-fed to an adult who sleeps on a laptop. Skip treating hairball kibble as medicine for a cat who vomits every week.

Purina indoor recipes (Pro Plan or ONE — read the line)
Purina sells indoor positioning on more than one line. Pro Plan and ONE are not the same price or the same recipe. The adult indoor bag is the one for a finished cat. The advantage is you can find it, including on Chewy Autoship. The Pro Plan vs Hill’s argument is the dog version of this fork.

- Households that want a complete indoor bag in a normal US grocery or on Autoship
- Skip if
- You grab “indoor” without checking kitten versus adult, or the clinic already picked a different protein.

Royal Canin Indoor Adult
Royal Canin Indoor Adult is aimed at indoor calorie load, stool odor, and hairballs in their catalog language. It is a complete diet with a specific kibble, not a quieter apartment. Some cats eat it more cleanly. Some cats do not. The stool and the waist tell you, over a few weeks, after a slow switch.
- Best for
- Cats who do better on that kibble shape, and owners who will still portion
- Skip if
- You wanted the cheapest indoor bag, or you think the brand replaces a urinary prescription.
Price note: Often about $35–$70 for the dry sizes people actually finish.

- A named indoor adult recipe instead of a flavor story.
- Sits next to their other feline diets if the clinic later changes the job.

Measured dry plus wet, or a fountain
Indoor formulas are often dry. Dry is convenient and easy to overfeed. Canned food, portioned, brings water. A cat fountain is the other half if they ignore a bowl. This is husbandry. It is not a claim that wet food prevents urinary disease. If the clinic wants a urinary diet, feed that.

- Indoor cats on mostly kibble who need a water plan
- Skip if
- You will pile wet food on a full dry ration and call it enrichment.

Kitten food or free-fed “all life stages” (skip)
Kitten diets are calorie-dense on purpose. An indoor adult does not need that density left out overnight. “All life stages” can be complete and still be the wrong calorie load for a cat who hunts dust. Senior is its own page when age, not the floor plan, is the constraint. Sensitive stomach is its own page when the clinic is chasing GI, not hairballs.
- Best for
- Kittens. Not the adult on the back of the couch.
- Skip if
- The bag’s life-stage statement matches this cat and you measure it.

How we scored indoor cat food
The job is an adult complete diet you can portion, with an indoor or hairball positioning that is not a costume. We weighted life-stage honesty, US availability, and whether water still has a plan.
We did not score “shinier coat in 14 days.” We did not treat fiber as a drug.
Calories, fiber, and water
Indoor cats often move less than the feeding guide’s imagination. Start at the guide for ideal weight, not current weight if they are already heavy, and ask the clinic before a steep cut. A waist you can feel is the feedback. The bag is not.
Hairball recipes typically add fiber so swallowed hair moves through. That can mean fewer wads on the rug. It does not mean you skip brushing, and it does not explain a cat who is losing weight or skipping the box. Odor litter is the other half of “the apartment smells,” and it is not food.
When indoor is the wrong word
Straining in the box, blood in the urine, or a male cat who stops passing urine is an emergency, not an indoor-formula problem. PrettyLitter’s color is not a lab.
A cat who goes outside is not required to eat an indoor bag. A cat who lives inside and has a named disease should eat what the clinic said. The apartment cat stack is the rest of the room: box, scratcher, vertical space.
