Best outdoor cat enclosures (2026)
An outdoor cat enclosure is a screened volume with a latch a raccoon cannot open. The job is: air and birds without traffic, coyotes, or a two-story drop. It is not a screen you lean on, and it is not “they’ll come back.”

The short list
Buy a named window box or balcony catio you can latch and attach to studs or a rail that is actually rated. Buy a larger freestanding catio only if the ground is yours and you will hardware-cloth the gaps. Skip dollar-store tunnels. Skip an open rail “for five minutes.” Window perches are indoor views. Carriers are how they go to the clinic, not a catio.

Catit / cat-first tunnel-to-box kits
Tunnels are only as good as both latches. A tunnel that pops off a sash is a launch. Buy hardware they sell. Apartment cats still need landlord permission.

- A contained path from a window they already use

PetSafe / patio-adjacent containment
Ground-level is the honest catio. Hardware cloth, a latch, shade, water. A scratcher they will use so they do not shred the mesh. Not a dog wireless fence.

- Ground-level patios you can fence with a real gate
- Skip if
- A third-floor rail and a hope.

A custom catio builder (honorable)
The honorable mention is a carpenter and hardware cloth. That is how serious catios happen. Kits are the apartment door. Custom is the house door. First-year cat cost does not require a catio.

Open balconies and popped screens (skip)
This slot is a no. High-rise falls are a real ER category. A screen is not a catio. Indoor-only is a complete life with enrichment.

How we scored enclosures
Latch, attach points, mesh you can inspect, and whether a raccoon has a theory. Pretty cedar scored after “will they fall.”
Attach it like you mean it
Studs, rated rails, and a door you latch every time. Water in shade. A box if they will be out long enough to need one — or they will use a planter. ID: chip, breakaway if they wear a collar. Parasites: species-correct products, not a dog pipette. Flea is a dog page; ask the cat clinic.
Hardware cloth beats decorative chicken wire. Gaps a kitten can fold through are how “contained” becomes a missing-poster. Zip-ties age in sun. Recheck fasteners after the first wind week. A window box that hangs on suction cups is a maybe you inspect every morning, not a set-and-forget room.
Predators, heat, and the lease
Raccoons open cheap latches. Neighborhood dogs jump. Hawks exist over some yards. Double latches and a roof, not a topless playpen. Shade in July — a black mesh box on a south wall is an oven. Water they cannot tip. Hot weather physics applies to cats; they just hide the distress better. Bring them in when the forecast is stupid.
Lease and HOA: marks on rails, falling objects, and neighbor cats are why people get a no. Ask in writing. A perch inside the glass is the apartment fallback. First-year cat cost does not require a catio; enrichment is the cheaper life.
Two cats in one small box will feud. Give volume or skip the enclosure and run two indoor territories — intro. A tunnel that dead-ends is a trap. Two exits or one cat.
When indoor-only is the ranking
Skip any kit you cannot attach to something rated. Skip an open rail “for five minutes.” Skip a third-floor hope. Indoor-only with a tree, a scratcher, and a window is a complete cat. A bad catio is a fall, a fight, or a raccoon dinner. We would rather you stay inside.
