An indoor cat enrichment stack (2026)

A wand toy you move like prey, then a meal. That sequence is the product. Interactive toys are extras. Lasers need a catch at the end — a kibble, a mouse toy — or you built frustration. Two short sessions beat a 40-minute chore you will skip.

Puzzle feeders for dry calories if the clinic is fine with dry. Automatic feeders are a clock, not enrichment, unless you still play. Fountains for drinkers. Urinary cats still need the named diet; a puzzle does not replace it.

Night zoomies: play before your bedtime, then food. A 3 a.m. attack is often an empty hunt. Stop scratching furniture is a post plus play, not a spray-only hobby.

Trees or large-cat trees they can own. A window perch on glass that is actually rated. Screens are not catios. A shelf they can miss on the way down needs a stair or a lower step for seniors — senior cat.

Scratchers: vertical sisal where they already stretch, horizontal cardboard if they prefer that. One post in the unused guest room is a decoration. Mats and odor litter so the box is a place they enter. n+1 boxes in a multi-cat house. A Litter-Robot they boycott is not enrichment.

Hide: a paper bag without handles, a carrier left out — anxious carriers — so the box is not only the vet. Intro two cats if you add a roommate.

You are part of the stack. A camera is a check, not a playmate. Talk-back is less useful for cats than dogs. A second cat is a project, not a toy — budget first-year twice and run an intro.

Outdoor time: a latched enclosure or a harness you already proofed indoors. An open rail is a fall. Outdoor safety if they are not indoor-only. Indoor-only plus this stack is allowed and often wiser.

Travel: the carrier they nap in is enrichment you already bought. Do not store it in the basement until the ER.

Skip a laser-only life. Skip an open balcony as “air.” Skip dog flea products. Skip a palace tree they cannot climb because the base wobbles.

Pick two wand slots you will keep — breakfast and your bedtime — and protect them like a walk. Rotate one puzzle and one mouse. Sit at the perch with coffee so the view is social. Scoop the box daily; a dirty box is how they stop using it and start using the tub — odor litter.
