Best automatic cat feeders (2026)
An automatic cat feeder is a portion and a lock, not a nutritionist. The job is: split dry calories when you are late, keep the dog out of the cat bowl, or keep cat A out of cat B’s prescription diet. It is not a wet-food robot unless the SKU is built for cans, and it is not a license to free-feed a 20-pound indoor cat.

The short list
Buy a microchip or RFID lid (SureFeed-class / PetSafe) if the job is who eats. Buy a wifi hopper (PETLIBRO-class) if the job is timed dry meals for one cat and you will still weigh the day’s calories. Skip hoppers for wet unless the SKU says wet. Skip as a 10-day vacation plan with no backup. A camera plus a neighbor is more honest than a jammed auger.

The lid is the product. Program the chip or collar tag. This is how a urinary diet stays in one mouth. Multi-pet feeding is the method. Batteries die — have a spare and a bowl you can set down.

- You have one cat and only needed a timer.

PETLIBRO wifi / camera hoppers (cat-sized)
A schedule and a portion number. Camera models are a pet cam extra, not a feeder requirement. Test the kibble shape before you fly. Senior cats still need the clinic bag in the hopper — the motor does not change the diet.

- One cat on dry food and a human who will set grams
- Skip if
- You feed wet-only, or two cats share-steal.

Catit / cat-first timed bowls
Catit lives next to fountains for a reason. A timed tray is enough for one indoor cat on a boring complete dry. Clean it; stale fat is how they boycott. Not a dog-proof lid.

- A simple timer without a wifi religion
- Skip if
- You needed theft-proofing.

A neighbor and a camera (honorable)
This slot outranks SKUs when you leave town. Wet food, pills, and a jammed hopper are a person. A Litter-Robot still needs a drawer empty. Tell them the cam is on.

- Any trip longer than the hopper you trust
- Skip if
- You already have a person at noon.

Wet-food gravity and 10-day hoppers (skip)
This slot is a no. Wet food sits out and becomes a science project unless the SKU is built for it and you still follow time limits. Gravity dry is free-feeding with extra steps. Measure.

- Spoiled protein and a fat cat

- You like measured complete food.

How we scored cat feeders
Portion honesty, lock vs timer, cleanability, and whether a dog can raid it. App icons scored after “who ate.” Not a veterinarian.
Who-eats vs when-it-drops
If the leak is the Lab or the other cat, buy a lid. If the leak is you at the office, buy a timer. If both, buy a lid on a schedule or two stations. Intro first if they are new — a feeder will not make them friends.
Prescription diets (urinary, renal, GI) are why lids exist. Do not run one hopper of grocery and hope. Multi-cat still wants n+1 boxes; food is a separate fight.
Calories and wet food
Indoor cats get fat on “it sounded like a small portion.” Weigh a day’s kibble once. Split it. Treats count. A camera hopper that tosses extra is a treat cam problem. Wet meals still want a person or a timed tray designed for wet — most hoppers are dry only.
Kittens need more frequent meals and a person — kitten stack. Seniors with appetite loss need a clinic, not a larger hopper dump. Fountain water is separate from food.
