A multi-pet household feeding guide (2026)
Multi-pet feeding is who-eats, not a bigger bowl. The job is: the prescription diet stays in the mouth it was named for, the Lab does not finish the cat’s calories, and nobody free-feeds a house into a 20-pound indoor cat and a 90-pound sofa dog. It is not one hopper and a hope.

Map the mouths
Write every animal, their diet, their calories, and who steals. A urinary cat plus a kibble Lab is the classic failure. Two cats on different senior and GI bags is the other. Senior cats and senior dogs need the named bag, not the house blend.
Feed on a schedule you can staff. Free-feed only if every animal can have that food and nobody is fat or on a clinic diet — rare in a mixed house. Weigh a day’s ration once. Treats count. Training treats are how the dog still gains when the bowl is “controlled.”
Intro first if they are new. A feeder will not make them friends. Rescue week: do not invent a shared buffet on day two.

Lids, rooms, and timers

Height helps some cats and zero Labs that can jump a chair. Do not bet the urinary bag on a windowsill. Dog hoppers (PETLIBRO) do not lock out a cat. Two stations beat one clever gadget.
Water: cats may want a fountain; dogs may want a dog fountain. Separate if the dog drinks the cat’s bowl dry. Boxes: n+1, not a shared buffet the puppy uses as a snack — proofing.
Prescription and fresh
Therapeutic diets are not a house kibble. If the clinic said only the sick one eats it, that is a lid. If they said the house can share a urinary or GI bag, get that in writing and still watch calories. Chewy authorization is a clinic sentence.
Fresh dog food in a multi-pet house is a theft and a thaw problem — Farmer’s monthly, transition. Cats should not live on dog fresh packs. A sitter needs a map — Rover. Write it on the fridge.
Allergy trials fail when the other pet’s food is a buffet. Eight weeks of the trial food only, or you bought a random month.
Skip-ifs
Skip one bowl for everyone. Skip punishing the thief instead of locking the food. Skip wet food in an open hopper. Skip a 10-day vacation on a jam-prone auger with no drop-in.

Sitters, cameras, and the fridge map
A Rover person cannot invent your lid logic. Write: who eats what, grams, which room, which chip lid, what to do if someone does not eat. Guarantee does not cover a stolen urinary bag. Tell them if a camera is on.
Vacation: a hopper plus a drop-in still beats a 10-day hope. Wet food needs a person. Litter-Robot drawers still need emptying. Chewy should already have the bags in the house — do not make the sitter shop a prescription they cannot buy.
New pet in an old house: run intro or rescue week before you share a kitchen. A feast on day two is how you buy a fight and a fat week. First-year math doubles on food more than you think once the thief is good at it. If you cannot say out loud who owns which bag, you do not have a feeding plan — you have a buffet.
